Women and Smoking

Over the decades, smoking has become almost as popular a habit among women as it is among men. Because of this, the Surgeon General conducted several reports on the specific effects smoking has on women. The findings, though not shocking overall, contained a number of interesting pieces of information regarding women and prolonged cigarette use.

Every year, around 173,940 US women die from smoking complications. As with men, female smokers increase their chances of developing dangerous cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and other conditions. For example:

  • Smokers are 13 times more likely to fall victim to emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
  • Smokers increase their risks of developing lung, throat, oral, esophagus, kidney, pancreatic, urinary tract, and cervix cancer.
  • Smokers are twice as likely to develop coronary disease.
  • Smokers tend to have lower bone density than non-smokers, making the more susceptible to suffering fractures.

Because women also bear children, smoking during pregnancy can have a number of devastating effects on the infant:

  • The baby is more likely to be born prematurely or with a low birth weight.
  • Secondhand smoke can cause the baby to fall ill.
  • The child of a smoker is more likely to develop asthma.

The only way a mother can fully protect her children from these harmful effects is to quit smoking altogether while pregnant. Not only will this help the child, but it will also be beneficial to the mother’s health.
