Chantix and the Role of Varenicline

The anti-smoking drug Chantix contains a unique chemical compound known as Varenicline that is intended to help smokers end their addiction. This compound makes Chantix unique among anti-smoking options. Most products recommended to help smokers quit their habit contain small amounts of nicotine that are used to help wean the smoker off of his or her nicotine addiction.

Chantix, however, uses Varenicline instead of nicotine, which binds to nicotine receptors in the body. By binding to nicotine receptors, the Varenicline essentially “tricks” the body into thinking that it is receiving nicotine, which eliminates the craving to smoke or otherwise use tobacco products.

While Varenicline has been tested for and has shown success with helping individuals quit smoking, it has also had other unintended effects on people who take the drug. One of the most common side-effects is nausea, but other side-effects experienced include: insomnia, strange dreams or nightmares, and headaches. These side-effects were reported by Chantix manufacturer Pfizer, but initially, more serious side-effects went under reported. These include suicidal thoughts, suicidal behavior, depression, and uncharacteristic violent behavior.

While Pfizer has claimed that these more severe symptoms may just be signs of nicotine withdrawal, some people who were taking Chantix and experienced these symptoms had not stopped smoking. The multitude of serious physical and mental health complaints against Chantix led the FDA to require a black box warning on all Chantix packaging.

While not everyone may experience these harmful side-effects, there is no way of knowing how your body will react to the drug until you begin to take it. If you plan to quit smoking, consider talking to your doctor about alternatives to Chantix. If you have already taken Chantix and have experienced any of the above severe side-effects, discontinue use and contact a Chantix injury lawyer immediately. You may be entitled to compensation for injuries or health problems caused by the drug.
