History of Chantix
Chantix, a drug derived from the chemical varenicline tartrate, emerged onto the market as a very popular, orally administered anti-smoking drug in 2006. Chantix works by blocking neurological receptors that respond to the addictive qualities of nicotine, which causes an individual to lose his or her craving for a cigarette. However, as more and more people took the drug, it became obvious that its side effects were quite dangerous. Users experienced not only minor physical ailments such as nausea and constipation, but also drastic mood swings that left them with abnormal bouts of severe depression or hostility.
Pharmaceutical company Pfizer developed Chantix and enlisted 1,022 smokers in their clinical studies before the drug was released onto the market. During this evaluation program, which lasted for 12 weeks, the patients were administered Chantix twice a day. By the end, 44% of them had quit smoking altogether and the majority of them experienced a significant drop in their desires to use cigarettes.
Because this pharmaceutical product was so successful, it was fully released onto the public market after a shortened trial period. It appeared to be an excellent solution for those wishing to quit smoking without experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. However, as time passed, it became apparent that Chantix had some extremely serious side-effects. A large number of users reported feeling new and strong feelings of depression, aggressiveness, and suicidal thoughts after taking Chantix.
Many instances of psychotic and/or suicidal behavior among Chantix users arose in 2007 and 2008. Numerous traffic accidents were linked to Chantix, as well. In 2008, the Federal Aviation Administration banned pilots and air traffic controllers from using the product. Finally, on July 1, 2009, the Food and Drug Administration placed a black box warning on Chantix, alerting users of the potential to exhibit suicidal behavior after taking this drug.
