Chantix and Suicide
Since its release in 2006, the stop-smoking drug Chantix has been linked to over 100 suicides among its users. Because the drug caused so many negative psychological side effects in its users, in July of 2009, the Food and Drug Administration instituted a requirement, mandating that Chantix must carry a black box warning on its packaging. This special label will warn future users of Chantix of its dangerous effects on mood, behavior, and thoughts.
What is a black box warning?
A black box warning is the gravest form of cautionary advice a drug manufacturer can deliver to the users of its products. This label is named as such because it has a thick black border around the text, indicating its significance. Only medications with very adverse and potentially dangerous side effects are required to have such a notice.
Deadly Side Effects
Unfortunately, the popular anti-smoking drug Chantix has been linked with a number of dangerous and even deadly side effects. By 2007, 37 suicides and over 400 incidences of suicidal behavior had been reported among its users. While there were initial suspicions that these were simply the normal withdrawal effects associated with quitting smoking, a number of users who continued to smoke while taking the drug felt these symptoms, as well.
These reports prompted the FDA had to conduct studies on the significance and severity of the psychological side effects of taking Chantix. In the end, it was determined that Chantix was linked to adverse behavior changes, severe mood swings, depression, hostility, and suicidal thoughts.
